Adhesion of Salmonella Enteritidis to stainless steel surfaces BJM
Oliveira,Kelly; Oliveira,Tereza; Teixeira,Pilar; Azeredo,Joana; Oliveira,Rosário.
Adhesion of microorganisms to food processing surfaces and the problems it causes are a matter of strong concern to the food industry. Contaminated food processing surfaces may act as potential sources of transmission of pathogens in food industry, catering and in the domestic environments. Several studies have shown that adhesion of bacteria to surfaces partly depends upon the nature of the inert surfaces and partly upon the bacterial surface properties. The aim of this study was to compare the adhesion of four different strains of Salmonella Enteritidis to stainless steel 304 (SS 304). The effect of surface hydrophobicity and surface elemental composition on the adhesion process was also analysed. Hydrophobicity was evaluated through contact angle...

Aggregate Stability in Soil with Humic and Histic Horizons in a Toposequence under Araucaria Forest Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Hanke,Daniel; Dick,Deborah Pinheiro.
ABSTRACT Aggregate stability is one of the most important factors in soil conservation and maintenance of soil environmental functions. The objective of this study was to investigate the aggregate stability mechanisms related to chemical composition of organic matter in soil profiles with humic and histic horizons in a toposequence under Araucaria moist forest in southern Brazil. The soils sampled were classified as Humic Hapludox (highest position), Fluvaquentic Humaquepts (lowest slope position), and Typic Haplosaprists (floodplain). The C and N contents were determined in bulk soil samples. The chemical composition of soil organic matter was evaluated by infrared spectroscopy. Aggregate stability was determined by applying increasing levels of...

Assessment of hydrophobicity and roughness of stainless steel adhered by an isolate of Bacillus cereus from a dairy plant BJM
Bernardes,Patrícia Campos; Andrade,Nélio José de; Ferreira,Sukarno Olavo; Sá,João Paulo Natalino de; Araújo,Emiliane Andrade; Delatorre,Deyse Maria Zanom; Luiz,Lívia Maria Pinheiro.
The interaction between the surface of stainless steel and Bacillus cereus was studied in terms of the characteristics of interfacial interaction determined from the measurement of the contact angle of the surface of B. cereus and stainless steel in the presence or absence of B. cereus adherence. The microtopographies and the roughness of the surface of stainless steel and stainless steel adhered by B. cereus were evaluated with the help of atomic force microscopy and perfilometry. The strain of B. cereus studied was considered hydrophilic, whereas the stainless steel was considered hydrophobic. The adhesion was not thermodynamically favorable (ΔGadhesion > 0) between the stainless steel and the strain of B. cereus studied. Thus, the interaction between...

Cell surface characteristics and adherence of typeable and non-typeable strains of Streptococcus suis from pig farms in Cuba Rev Salud Anim.
Espinosa Castaño,Ivette; Arias Baéz,Michel; Lobo Rivero,Evelyn; Martínez Marrero,Siomara.
Streptococcus suis infection is considered a major problem in the swine industry. There are 35 known serotypes of S. suis based on the capsular polysaccharides (CPS) on the cell surface. Serotype 2 is the most virulent in pigs and humans. Some S. suis strains do not agglutinate with any of the typing antisera and are identified as non-typable strains, which have generally been viewed as organisms that do not cause important clinical infections. Previous studies have shown differences in the composition and properties of the cell surface among these strains. The aim of this study included the characterization of cell hydrophobicity, ability to adhere to plates, and autolysis over time of typeable and non-typeable strains of S. suis from farms of the Cuban...

Chemical characterization and infrared spectroscopy of soil organic matter from two southern brazilian soils Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Dick,D. P.; Santos,J. H. Z.; Ferranti,E. M..
Soil organic matter from the surface horizon of two Brazilian soils (a Latosol and a Chernosol), in bulk samples (in situ SOM) and in HF-treated samples (SOM), was characterized by elemental analyses, diffuse reflectance (DRIFT) and transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (T-FTIR). Humic acids (HA), fulvic acids (FA) and humin (HU) isolated from the SOM were characterized additionally by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS). After sample oxidation and alkaline treatment, the DRIFT technique proved to be more informative for the detection of "in situ SOM" and of residual organic matter than T-FTIR. The higher hydrophobicity index (HI) and H/C ratio obtained in the Chernosol samples indicate a stronger aliphatic character of the organic...

Elastin increases biofilm and extracellular matrix production of Aspergillus fumigatus BJM
Brandão,Ildnay de Souza Lima; Oliveira-Moraes,Heloiza Maria da Silva; Motta,Cristina Maria de Souza; Oliveira,Neiva Tinti de; Magalhães,Oliane Maria Correia.
Abstract Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic saprobe fungus that accounts for 90% of cases of pulmonary aspergillosis in immunosuppressed patients and is known for its angiotropism. When it reaches the respiratory tract, A. fumigatus interacts with structural components and blood vessels of the lungs, such as elastin. To understand the effect of this structural component, we examined the effect of elastin on the production and development of the biofilm of A. fumigatus. In RPMI containing 10 mg/mL of elastin, a significant increase (absorbance p < 0.0001; dry weight p < 0.0001) in the production of biofilm was observed in comparison to when RPMI was used alone, reaching a maximum growth of 18.8 mg (dry weight) of biofilm in 72 h. In addition,...

Explicit and implicit modeling of nanobubbles in hydrophobic confinement Anais da ABC (AABC)
Dzubiella,Joachim.
Water at normal conditions is a fluid thermodynamically close to the liquid-vapor phase coexistence and features a large surface tension. This combination can lead to interesting capillary phenomena on microscopic scales. Explicit water molecular dynamics (MD) computer simulations of hydrophobic solutes, for instance, give evidence of capillary evaporation on nanometer scales, i.e., the formation of nanometer-sized vapor bubbles (nanobubbles) between confining hydrophobic surfaces. This phenomenon has been exemplified for solutes with varying complexity, e.g., paraffin plates, coarse-grained homopolymers, biological and solid-state channels, and atomistically resolved proteins. It has been argued that nanobubbles strongly impact interactions in nanofluidic...

In vitro evaluation of adhesion and aggregation abilities of four potential probiotic strains isolated from guppy (Poecilia reticulata) BABT
Balakrishna,Aparna.
The aim of this work was to study the probiotic-related characteristics of four strains of bacteria isolated from the normal flora of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. In vitro results showed that the strains, namely, MBTU_PB1, MBTU_PB2, MBTU_PB3 and MBTU_PB4 had higher adhesion abilities than the tested indicator strains. However, an association between the cell-surface hydrophobicity and the ability to adhere to the intestinal mucus was not observed for these strains. Further, the selected strains were strongly autoaggregating (autoaggregation percentage ≥ 80) and also showed strain-specific coaggregation abilities with the tested indicator strains.

Influence of growth media and temperature on bacterial adhesion to polystyrene surfaces BABT
Zeraik,Ana Eliza; Nitschke,Marcia.
Bacterial adhesion to inert surfaces is a complex process influenced by environmental conditions. In this work, the influence of growth medium and temperature on the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Listeria monocytogenes to polystyrene surfaces was studied. Most bacteria demonstrated the highest adhesion when cultured in TSYEA, except S. marcescens, which showed to be positively influenced by the pigment production, favored in poor nutrient media (lactose and peptone agar). P. aeruginosa adhesion to polystyrene increased at low temperatures whatever the medium used. The culture medium influenced the surface properties of the bacteria as assessed by the MATS test.

Influence of subinhibitory concentrations of antimicrobials on hydrophobicity, adherence and ultra-structure of Fusobacterium nucleatum BJM
Okamoto,Ana C.; Gaetti-Jardim Jr.,Elerson; Arana-Chavez,Victor E.; Avila-Campos,Mario J..
Fusobacterium nucleatum is considered a bridge organism between earlier and later colonizers in dental biofilms and a putative periodontopathogen. In Dentistry, antimicrobial agents are used for treatment and control of infectious diseases associated with dental plaque. Antiseptics have been used in association with antibiotics to reduce infections after oral surgeries. In this study, the influence of subinhibitory concentrations (SC) of chlorhexidine, triclosan, penicillin G and metronidazole, on hydrophobicity, adherence to oral epithelial cells, and ultra-structure of F. nucleatum was examined. All isolates were susceptible to chlorhexidine, triclosan, and metronidazole; however, most of the isolates were susceptible to penicillin G, and all of them...

Nitrogen starvation affects bacterial adhesion to soil BJM
Borges,Maria Tereza; Nascimento,Antônio Galvão; Rocha,Ulisses Nunes; Tótola,Marcos Rogério.
One of the main factors limiting the bioremediation of subsoil environments based on bioaugmentation is the transport of selected microorganisms to the contaminated zones. The characterization of the physiological responses of the inoculated microorganisms to starvation, especially the evaluation of characteristics that affect the adhesion of the cells to soil particles, is fundamental to anticipate the success or failure of bioaugmentation. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of nitrogen starvation on cell surface hydrophobicity and cell adhesion to soil particles by bacterial strains previously characterized as able to use benzene, toluene or xilenes as carbon and energy sources. The strains LBBMA 18-T (non-identified), Arthrobacter...

Alves,Roberta Barbosa Teodoro; Andrade,Nélio José de; Fontes,Edimar Aparecida Filomeno; Bernardes,Patrícia Campos; Carvalho,Antônio Fernandes de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of water purification system and identify the bacteria this system, predict bacterial adherence according to the hydrophobicity of these microorganisms and of the polypropylene distribution loop for purified water. The assessment of drinking water that supplies the purification system allowed good-quality physical, chemical, and microbiological specifications. The physicochemical specifications of the distributed purified water were approved, but the heterotrophic bacteria count was higher than allowed (>2 log CFU mL-1).The sanitation of the storage tank with chlorine decreased the number of bacteria adhered to the surface (4.34 cycles log). By sequencing of the 16SrDNA genes, six species...

PHYSICAL, MECHANICAL AND THERMAL BEHAVIOR OF ADOBE STABILIZED WITH “SYNTHETIC TERMITE SALIVA” REA
Gandia,Rômulo M.; Corrêa,Andrea A. R.; Gomes,Francisco C.; Marin,Diego B.; Santana,Lucas S..
ABSTRACT Adobe is an efficient construction material for several reasons, such as its thermal comfort, sustainability, and lower energy cost, as well as the simplicity of its production and execution. However, challenges such as water absorption, capillarity, and compressive strength should be investigated to improve its physical and mechanical properties. “Synthetic termite saliva” (STS) is an excellent stabilizer with high cohesive and hydrophobic power. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of STS incorporation into adobe, analyzing its physical, mechanical and thermal properties. Five treatments were studied: 0 (control); 0.1; 0.2; 0.4 and 0.8% STS by mass. These adobe samples were evaluated according to bulk density, linear...

Preliminary evaluation of adherence on abiotic and cellular surfaces of Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from catheter tips BJID
Costa,Gislaine Franco de Moura; Tognim,Maria Cristina Bronharo; Cardoso,Celso Luíz; Carrara-Marrone,Floristher Elaine; Garcia,Lourdes Botelho.
The cell surface hydrophobicity and adhesion to abiotic and cellular surfaces was tested in five clinical strains of Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from catheter tips. Biochemical and molecular characteristics of these strains were also studied. Hydrophobicity was characterized by a test for affinity to xylene. Adhesion to abiotic surfaces (polystyrene, formica, latex and glass) was evaluated in Petri plates using the stamp technique. Buccal epithelial cells were used for tests of adhesion to cellular surfaces. Adhesion to the catheter was evaluated by repeatedly rinsing the catheters and rolling them over nutrient agar. Molecular typing of the strains was done by the ERIC-PCR technique. The degree of hydrophobicity of the strains varied from hydrophobic...

The hydrophobicity and roughness of a nasoenteral tube surface influences the adhesion of a multi-drug resistant strain of Staphylococcus Aureus BJM
Lima,J.C.; Andrade,N.J.; Soares,N.F.F.; Ferreira,S.O.; Fernandes,P.E.; Carvalho,C.C.P.; Lopes,J.P.; Martins,J.F.L.
In this study, we examined the physiochemical properties of nasoenteral feeding tubes made from two different types of polymer: silicone materials and polyurethane. The internal surfaces of the nasoenteral feeding tubes were analyzed for their hydrophobicity, roughness, microtopography, rupture-tension and ability to stretch. We also studied the adhesion of an isolated, multi-drug resistant strain of S. aureus to these polymers. The polyurethane nasoenteral tube, which was classified as hydrophilic, was more resistant to rupture-tension and stretching tests than the silicone tube, which was classified as hydrophobic. Additionally, the polyurethane tube had a rougher surface than the silicone tube. Approximately 1.0 log CFU.cm-2 of S. aureus cells adhered...

The relation between Escherichia coli surface functional groups' composition and their physicochemical properties BJM
Hamadi,Fatima; Latrache,Hassan; Zahir,Hafida; Elghmari,Abderrahmene; Timinouni,Mohamed; Ellouali,Mostapha.
Escherichia coli surface characteristics including hydrophobicity, electrophoretic mobility and surface functional groups' composition were investigated. These characteristics were determined respectively by water contact angle measurements, microelectrophoresis and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The relation between the physicochemical properties and functional groups' composition was also examined. The electrophoretic mobility at pH 7 appeared to be governed on the cell surface by the (O=C) functional groups. The cell surface's hydrophilicity was associated with high levels of (C-(O.N)) and (OH-(C-O-C)) functional groups, whereas the cell surface's hydrophobicity was associated with (C-(C,H)) functional groups.
